Get Social with QBB!

Since I'm probably about 4 weeks from having a functioning computer again, I think I've found a solution to keep sharing my quirky, busy, and beautiful thoughts with my loyal blog readers without spending extra money on a crap laptop to bridge the gap. (It turns out that I loathe Windows 8 with a passion and don't want it in my house. Period.)  QBB is going social!

While I can't edit photos on an iPad mini, I can certainly post to Instagram!  Check me out on Instagram, user name quirkybusyandbeautiful, for on-the-fly thoughts and photos.

Likewise, I created a QBB Pintrest account.  I'm admittedly a Pintrest novice, so bear with me.  I see that as more an insight into my muddled mind.

There are already posts/boards on both accounts, so please feel free to join the fun.  Your little QBB is going social!

Please note: I'll edit links into the post once I actually have the real Blogger editor again. There's no apparent way to embed links with the mobile app.

If anyone has figured out ways around the basic text editor in the Blogger app, please let me know!

QBB's Rules for Stress-Free Beauty Collecting

This past week was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in a long time trying to buy specific items. Although the largest part of my frustration is due to the poor marketing tactics of one company (and it's lead to my almost total abandonment of said brand), a few days later it occurred to me that I had violated some of my rules for stress-free beauty collecting.  They've treated me well, so I wanted to share my knowledge:

  • Become a regular.  I didn't have access to the brand I wanted to track down because it's not one that I buy frequently anymore. More importantly, I'm not known around the counters.  I'm a frequent shopper and known on sight at the 2 closest Sephoras, closest SiJCP, Ulta, and Nordstrom by most of the staff. It also means I am usually able to browse in peace and take my time without being followed by overzealous SAs or loss prevention.
  • Cultivate your relationships, and cultivate a variety of them. I have SAs for several key brands that I work with exclusively, and I frequently get tipped off before products are released. This is information that SAs share freely with their core customers because they know that we are likely to purchase the items. Furthermore, some brands allow pre-ordering or reservations for highly limited collections. Everyone has a different piece of information (ie management at a local Burberry boutique vs Nordstrom Burberry SAs).
  • Don't be afraid to work the phone. I'll admit it; I'd rather just type behind a keyboard rather than call a store and talk to someone. However, this is the best way to build distant relationships, get information, and find products that aren't on websites. SAs generally don't mind answering a few questions or pulling a product for you. Here are a few real examples:
    • I've actually bought four Burberry eyeshadow singles that weren't on the website (one on its way now) by calling counters directly. While Pale Barley was allegedly sold out everywhere, at least three counters had plenty of stock if you called!
    • Although my local MAC counter was sold out of the items that I wanted from the Alluring Aquatic Collection, I only had to call three more places to locate the two pieces I was most interested in, and put the items on hold.
  • Don't chase the shiny object. We all love LE items, and that type of packaging works well in the beauty world. Just keep in mind that there are usually dupes, so don't worry if you can't find it!
  • Just say no to Ebay. I shake my head at the insane prices online. Don't make ebay buying a habit, and avoid the pricing wars. I also question the freshness of some items.

Those are my rules that have served me well. YMMV, but I wanted to share them with you.  What are your personal rules?

Quick Five: Lately Edition

Although my monthly beauty favorites posts are a nice reflection of where I am, beauty-wise, I love the idea of being able to share with you what's on my mind in an more immediate fashion.  Here are 5 things I'm loving lately.

1. I'm turning into a blush fiend. It has typically been the product I bought and used the least of, but I've been on a blush buying spree and experimentation tear. I think I've bought six blushes over the past 30 days when I usually don't buy six per year. I've also learned to love a bit of a bolder blush.

2. I've been working on my nail art skills the last week or so.  I recently had a chance to attend a master class (more later) and I picked up some new nail art skills.  Don't expect to see me blog about them anytime soon, as I'm truly a neophyte.

3. Usually, spring means bright lips for me. Lately, I've been loving a simple yet natural pink lip.  Some of my favorites are Butter London Lippy in Berry Whipped, Rouge Coco Shine in Boy, and Trish McEvoy Essential Balm in Gorgeous Pink.

4. My new tv obsession?  House of Cards. I'm a little behind the curve, but I only re-subscribed to Netflix recently. It's incredible.

 5. High end perfumes. Wine and perfume are two things that I lack the sophistication to explain "notes" in, but I know if I like them or not.  I'm currently loving Tom Ford Santal Blush, but I can't imagine paying $210 for a bottle.

That Magic Moment...

For beauty addicts, there is one feeling of utter joy and elation that can cause us to literally jump and twirl and leap like mad women possessed.

It's that magic moment where you track down an elusive item that you've been hunting for months and that you know will become a HG item for you.  You had it within grasp earlier- and passed on it.  And you've regretted it ever since.

I've experienced that joy several times recently, including finally finding an item that is out of stock online but was magically living on the West Coast, just waiting for a happy home.  The lovely SA who assisted me over the phone asked what time it was for me (it was close to closing time for them) and commented "wow, you really want this eyeshadow!".  Yes, fellow beauty addicts, what's a midnight phone call every now and then?

I'm even prouder because I've tracked down these items without resorting to evilbay.  What's the moral of this story?  Even in this digital age, don't be afraid to pick up the phone.  You might just find that elusive HG item- and a great new SA to work with!

For what it's worth, the stalking strategy is what netted me the Dior Summer 2013 blush brush (you know, the RED one) from Nordstrom when it reappeared on the site for a moment in February.  You'll have to wait to find out what my other items are (including the midnight phone calls and subsequent squee-ing/victory dance after I hung up).

What were your makeup victories?  And what are you still looking for?

When Customer Service is less than Beautiful

In order to protect the guilty (and avoid legal issues), I won't be using any company names in this post.  Let me state: all opinions contained in this post are that of an individual consumer and events that happened to me personally. Some events may be worded differently as to avoid identification of a company.

One of the most frustrating parts of being a beauty lover, in my opinion, is dealing with beauty companies. I've had some horrible experiences lately that have left me just wanting to buy what's in-store... when the in-store experience isn't awful.  Ah, the things we do for beauty.

Online:

Site #1: I found an in-demand product on the site, and promptly ordered it. I waited 8 days before finally contacting customer service on when I might see it. I received unwarranted attitude, and finally learned that it was due to ship First Class Mail.  This item, although small in size, was worth between $50-150.  No tracking information would be available for me, and allegedly I would see it in another week and a half.  The company would have protection, but I would not.  I've had issues with mis-deliveries lately with the mail, so it was quite possible that it would appear to be delivered but I wouldn't receive it. I would merely be out the money and the product. It was a two-day fight just to cancel an order that hadn't gone to a warehouse and hadn't shipped. It took threatening to go to the media to their consumer reporters to have it canceled. (My point was that they were sending products worth a non-insignificant amount of money in a way that the company would be covered but the customer could end up defrauded.) I'm done with them.

Site #2: I placed an order for an item that I wanted very much, and it was suddenly canceled after three days. I re-placed the order and after another three days, it was cancelled again.  It took 20 minutes on hold with customer service to be told that the item was out-of-stock.  That's understandable, but the out-of-stock item has been available to order for more than a week. When I told the representative that it was still available on the website, I was told "that's not my department. Goodbye."  And yes, the phone disconnected.  Customer service at its finest there. I just feel badly for everyone else who will go through the canceled order dance.

Site #3: This is actually not about the sender but rather the shipper. I had several fragile items sent more than 1500 miles away when weather threatened.  They'd gotten to my state and within 150 miles at that point. It took an additional week to receive the items- and when I opened them, they were damaged. I've had many issues with this company (there are only a few), but this latest nightmare left me quite unsatisfied.

Just when you thought it was safe to purchase in-store, here are a few horror stories I've encountered lately:

Store #1: I am a huge fan of this store, but there is one location that I will not enter the beauty department.  This is a store where you can check online inventory. In my area, I have access to numerous locations of all the major chains. My heart sinks if this is the only location with the items in stock, because it means I'll have to order online and wait the greater part of the week for the item. When you walk even within 10 feet of the periphery of the department, you are immediately mobbed by 3-4 associates who will not stop hounding you no matter what. Even if it's merely a cut-through to the exit, you'll leave feeling battered and worse about yourself. This store stands out as a aberration for this chain, as the other local location is just lovely.

Store #2: Don't even bother trying to get service unless you're carrying all of the following: designer handbag, designer accessories, and loaded shopping bags from the other high-end retailers in the mall. An obviously well-dressed and wealthy male shopping companion is a bonus.  This isn't the norm for this chain- even in our area. It's just this location. It's a shame, because it's the largest counter for one of my favorite brands in the region. Inevitably I end up frustrated or annoyed if I try to shop here. There are three default attitudes for the associates here: gracious and catering (if you obviously have money), persona non grata, or treated as a potential shoplifter.

Just to end this post on a happy note, here are a few gold stars- and not to the expected raves:

1. Bloomingdales- I found the item I wanted from story #1 on backorder here.  I placed the order, expecting it to arrive in April.  I was shocked to discover that it shipped yesterday, and I'll have it on Monday.  This is more than 2 weeks before it was originally scheduled to ship. No fuss, no muss.  That's exactly what you look for.

2. Burberry- I refused to order from the site until the advent of ship to store for one simple reason: for the customer's protection, all items ship with a required signature upon delivery. It doesn't matter if you're buying a $20 bottle of nail polish or $1000 handbag, you're going to have to sign.  I find it lovely that they care about the customer, but it's ultimately impractical for those of us with a 9-5 (or greater).  Ship to store eliminates the requirement for a signature and gives you ten days to pick up your item.  The only downside that I've personally experienced is that beauty items tend not to be the first items in the order unpacked- so don't hold your breath on next-day availability. Still, it's a wonderful service.

3. Chanel- Unlike other high-end retailers, they actually do not print CHANEL on the outside of your package.  It's a great thing that means that your package is less likely to be swiped since it's less inviting. I just wish others (hello, Dior?) would take the same approach.

What are your rants and raves?

Transition

As I started to pull together my clothes for the next workday, I was struck at the juxtaposition of seasons, fabrics, and colors I'm wearing these days.  This late-season blast of Arctic air has enabled me to wear some of my favorite tweeds later than normal.

That's not to say that there aren't signs of spring. One just has to look at my cheerful makeup and spring is clearly around the corner.

I love these weeks before the season change in spring and fall. Layering of fabrics, colors, textures... it's all so beautiful.

Beautiful Thoughts: I Need You!

The title of the blog promised some quirky moments- this is the first of many, I'm sure.

I need you!  I see your page views, but with no comments or emails, I have no idea if this content is useful to anyone- or what direction I should be going with the blog. Right now I'm working my way through my collection as well as new purchases, but that will run out eventually.  I enjoy blogging, but the goal is this not to be a vanity exercise.  I'd hoped to start some discussions, but that has fallen flat.

So lovelies- I need you!
